What is each train ticket app best at?

There is no single best UK train ticket app. The right choice depends on what you are trying to do. Booking a cheap domestic trip is a different problem from buying a season ticket, or booking trains for a trip abroad.

This is an honest guide to what each app genuinely does well, written by someone who has tested them all. Before I built Choo Choo, I could not find a single app that solved all three of my personal frustrations: no booking fees, proper split ticketing, and automatic delay compensation alerts. So I built one. Full disclosure, I have a stake in this. But I will tell you when I think a competitor is the better choice.

What is Choo Choo best at?

Best for: finding cheap UK domestic ticket and delay repay alerts

Choo Choo specialises in split ticketing: automatically checking whether a combination of two or more tickets covers your journey for less than a standard through-fare. You stay on the same train throughout. In our January 2026 test of 22 popular routes, Choo Choo was cheapest or joint-cheapest on 68% of journeys, coming in first place.

Beyond price, Choo Choo sends you a notification when your train is delayed enough to claim Delay Repay compensation. Most passengers never claim because they don’t know when they are eligible. The Choo Choo app tells you automatically.

Other features worth knowing: no booking fees, no ads, dark mode, and available on iOS, Android, and the web.

Choo Choo vs Trainline

We tested Choo Choo against Trainline across 22 of the most popular UK train routes. Every search used identical parameters. Here is what we found.

What is Trainpal best at?

Best for: split ticketing on UK routes

TrainPal does split ticketing and does it well. It has drawn criticism for some of its in-app prompts and upsells, but the core product is solid. In our January 2026 test, TrainPal came in 2nd with the cheapest or joint-cheapest prices on 50% of journeys, which is a decent result.

Where Choo Choo and TrainPal overlap in purpose, we believe Choo Choo finds cheaper fares more consistently and with fewer distractions. But TrainPal is a better option than most alternatives for price-conscious UK domestic travel.

What is Uber Trains best at?

Best for: one-app convenience

If you already use Uber regularly and want to book trains without downloading another app, Uber Trains is a reasonable choice. It has a clean interface, dark mode, and Uber One subscribers get some additional rewards on train bookings.

It is not the strongest option for finding the cheapest fare. In our January 2026 test, Uber was cheapest or joint-cheapest on 32% of journeys. But convenience has a value, and for someone who simply wants their travel in one place, that trade-off makes sense.

Existing Uber users who want a single app for all their travel, and are not primarily driven by getting the lowest fare.

What are TOC apps best at?

Best for: season tickets

If you commute regularly on one route, the relevant train company's own app is worth considering. Booking a season ticket directly through the operator is straightforward, and most TOC apps do not charge a booking fee.

The main limitation is that TOC apps rarely offer split ticketing. And so a third-party app like Choo Choo, Trainline or Trainpal will almost always find a cheaper or same price fare.

Some TOC apps have Delay Repay functionality built in, though this has mixed reviews on its functionality. That may still improve over time.

Natural customer

Regular commuters on a single route who want a season ticket and a direct relationship with their operator.

What is the National Rail app best at?

Best for: checking live departure times

The National Rail app is great for checking live train times, departures and platform information.

It is less suited to booking. The interface is slightly-dated compared to apps listed above, and it carries advertising. For booking, a third-party accredited retailer will typically offer a better booking experience and, in many cases, a lower price due to split ticketing.

FAQs about UK train ticket apps

Which app is cheapest for UK train tickets?

For most UK domestic journeys, Choo Choo or TrainPal will find the cheapest fare, primarily because of split ticketing. In our January 2026 test, Choo Choo was cheapest or joint-cheapest on 68% of the 22 routes tested, Trainpal came in second with 50%.

Is Trainline worth using for UK trains?

For UK domestic travel, Trainline isn’t always the cheapest option and charges a booking fee on many journeys. Its main strength is European rail, where it offers a convenient English-language booking experience.

Do TOC apps charge booking fees?

Most do not, though this varies by operator. The trade-off is that most TOC apps do not offer split ticketing (and if they do, it’s only exclusive to their own routes), which means they are often more expensive than third-party apps on routes where split ticket savings are available.

Which app is best for delay compensation?

Choo Choo and Trainline sends automatic alerts when your train is delayed enough to claim Delay Repay. Most other apps require you to check eligibility yourself. Some TOC apps have Delay Repay processes too.
