Choo Choo vs Trainline vs TrainPal vs Uber: Finding the Best Train Booking App

We tested Choo Choo, Trainline, TrainPal, and Uber across 22 UK train routes to find out which app offers the cheapest tickets. The result: Choo Choo offered the best or joint-best price on 68% of journeys, with 7 (the most) outright wins. Here’s the full breakdown of the test and each train ticketing app:

The Test

We conducted a comprehensive price comparison across 22 different routes throughout the UK. Each search was performed on 15th January 2026 using the closest available departure to 8am on 1st February 2026. All searches were for a single adult ticket with no railcard, ensuring a like-for-like comparison.

The routes tested covered a wide range of popular journeys, from short regional trips to longer cross-country services, including:

  • Birmingham New Street to Newcastle
  • Brighton to London Victoria
  • Liverpool Lime Street to Southampton Central
  • London Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley
  • Manchester Piccadilly to Coventry
  • And 17 other popular routes

For each journey, we selected the same service across all four apps and recorded the final price including all fees.

Analysis

Out of 22 journeys tested, the results were clear:

Outright wins (where one app offered the lowest price alone):

  • Choo Choo: 7 wins
  • TrainPal: 3 wins
  • Uber: 2 wins
  • Trainline: 0 wins

Best price count (including ties):

  • Choo Choo: 15 times
  • TrainPal: 11 times
  • Uber: 7 times
  • Trainline: 3 times

Choo Choo offered the best or joint-best price on 68% of journeys tested, securing more outright wins than any other app. Trainline consistently came in as the most expensive option, often by a significant margin due to their booking fees.

Beyond Price: Why Features Matter

While competitive pricing is important, the best train booking app needs to deliver value in other ways too. Here's where Choo Choo really stands out:

A Clean, Simple Experience

Choo Choo's interface is designed to be refreshingly straightforward. No clutter, no confusing options, just a clean booking journey that gets you from search to confirmation quickly and easily. When you're rushing to book a ticket, simplicity matters.

No Ads

Unlike some competitors, Choo Choo doesn't interrupt your booking experience with advertisements. When you search for a journey, you see journey results – not banner ads or promotional offers mixed in with your search results.

Delay Compensation Alerts

Train delayed? Choo Choo automatically monitors your journeys and alerts you when you're eligible for delay compensation. This feature means you won't miss out on refunds you're entitled to – money that could otherwise be left on the table.

Direct Trains Filter

When you know you want a direct service, Choo Choo lets you filter for direct trains only. No need to scroll through multiple change options when you know exactly what you're looking for.

Booking Fees

Pricing transparency matters. Here's how the apps compare:

  • Choo Choo: No booking fees
  • TrainPal: No booking fees
  • Uber: No booking fees
  • Trainline: Variable booking fees (depends on journey, value, timing, and whether you're using the app or website

Split ticket saving commission

When it comes to split ticket fees, the apps each take a different approach. Trainline charges a SplitSave fee on top of your ticket price. TrainPal charges what they call a 'Split service fee', though they don't specify the exact amount or percentage, and don't always apply it depending on their current promotions.

Choo Choo charges a share of saving commission of up to 15%, but only when we've actually found you a saving, so if you're not saving money, you're not paying extra.

While these differences might look significant on paper, it's worth keeping in mind that they only ever apply to the savings found. In practice, the gap in split ticket savings between apps is often far greater than any commission charged.

What is Split Ticketing?

Split ticketing means buying two or more separate tickets to cover different legs of the same journey, rather than one through-ticket. The start and end points of your journey stay the same, but instead of paying for the whole thing in one go, you split it at an intermediate station.

It's completely legal and widely used across the UK. Split ticketing is explicitly permitted under section 14 of the National Rail Conditions of Travel, the official rulebook for UK rail travel. National Rail has a full guide on how it works here. You're not exploiting a loophole, it's an officially recognised way to buy train tickets.

What About the Alternatives?

Each app has its own strengths, and what works best for you will depend on your priorities:

Trainline is the most established name in the market and offers coach tickets alongside train tickets. However, our testing showed it consistently delivered the highest prices, often being the most expensive option by £5-£20 per journey. Trainline was frequently hindered by its booking fee, which pushed otherwise competitive fares into the most expensive bracket.

TrainPal performed well on price, securing joint-best pricing on half the journeys we tested.

Uber, which now offers train bookings, performed reasonably on price but doesn't specialise in rail travel in the way the other apps do.

The Verdict

Our testing of 22 journeys across the UK delivered clear results: Choo Choo offered the best value, with the best or joint-best price on 15 out of 22 journeys and 7 outright wins – more than any other app.

But great value is just the beginning. Choo Choo's automatic delay compensation alerts ensure you never miss out on refunds you're entitled to, while our clean, ad-free interface and simple booking process make getting tickets quick and hassle-free.

Whether you're a daily commuter or an occasional traveller, Choo Choo delivers the combination of competitive prices and smart features that makes train travel easier.

All prices and features accurate as of January 2026. Individual journey prices may vary depending on availability and booking conditions.
