Hero Section Background

What has changed?

Since Sunday 20 September 2026, if your train is cancelled you can travel on another participating operator's train to finish your journey, at no extra cost. You do not need to buy a new ticket or wait for staff to agree ticket acceptance.

Until now, a cancellation often left you stuck. You could wait on the platform while operators sorted out whether your ticket would be accepted elsewhere, buy a second ticket, or give up on the trip. That was especially frustrating at stations served by several companies, where another train to the same place might be sitting on the next platform.

Cross-operator acceptance already existed between publicly owned operators. The Department for Transport has now brought four major intercity operators into the scheme: Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry and Great Western Railway. It is part of the wider move towards Great British Railways.

How the Cancellation Scheme works

There are five conditions. If your situation meets all of them, you can board the other operator's train.

Condition

What it means in practice

Your train is cancelled

The scheme covers cancellations, not delays

You hold a valid ticket

The ticket you bought for the cancelled train

Both operators are in the scheme

The cancelled service and the replacement must both be run by participating operators

The replacement leaves within 2 hours

Within two hours before or after your cancelled train's departure time

The route is direct or reasonable

You cannot use it to go somewhere else or take a long detour

What to do on the day:

  1. Check the cancellation: Confirm your train is cancelled on the departure boards, the National Rail app, or in your Choo Choo notifications.
  2. Find the next suitable train: Look for a participating operator's service to your destination, leaving within the two-hour window.
  3. Board and keep your ticket handy: Show your original ticket to the onboard staff as proof of purchase. You do not need to download anything new.

Keep your ticket until the end of the journey. If you cannot show it, the scheme cannot help you.

Which Train Operators are taking part?

East Midlands Railway

Not yet, joining at a later date

East Midlands Railway has been held back because it is running a reduced timetable while it waits for new trains, and does not have the capacity to take extra passengers from other operators. No joining date has been announced.

Notably absent from the government's list are ScotRail, Transport for Wales, Caledonian Sleeper, Lumo, Hull Trains, Grand Central, Merseyrail, Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line. If your journey involves one of these, you will need to rely on the usual arrangements, such as ticket acceptance put in place on the day.

What the Scheme does not cover

The change is a real improvement, but it has limits worth knowing before you rely on it.

  • Delays are not included: The scheme is triggered by a cancellation. If your train is running late but still running, it does not apply automatically.
  • The two-hour window is fixed: A replacement train leaving more than two hours before or after your cancelled one is outside the scheme.
  • Non-participating operators: If either the cancelled train or the replacement is run by an operator outside the scheme, automatic acceptance does not apply.
  • No detours: The replacement must take a direct or reasonable alternative route to your destination.
  • You need your original ticket: A lost or discarded ticket is not covered. If you use e-tickets, make sure your phone is charged.

What about Advance tickets and split tickets?

Advance tickets are normally only valid on the train you booked. If that train is cancelled, the scheme lets you use your Advance ticket on a participating operator's train within the two-hour window, just like any other valid ticket for the cancelled service.

With split tickets, each ticket covers one part of the same journey. If a train on your journey is cancelled, show the tickets that cover the rest of your trip to the onboard staff on the replacement service. If you are unsure, speak to station staff before you board.

Cancellation Scheme, Delay Repay or a Refund?

The new scheme gets you moving. It does not replace your right to compensation. These are three separate things, and you may be entitled to more than one.

Option

When it applies

What you get

Cross-operator acceptance

Your train is cancelled and a participating operator has a train within 2 hours

Travel on their train at no extra cost

Delay Repay

You arrive late because of a delay or cancellation

Compensation based on how late you arrive and the ticket you bought

Refund

Your train is cancelled or delayed and you decide not to travel

Your money back for the unused ticket

So if your train is cancelled, you take another operator's train under the scheme and still reach your destination late, you can usually claim Delay Repay as well.

Most operators pay Delay Repay from 15 minutes late, including Avanti West Coast, GWR, LNER, Northern and TransPennine Express. A few, including c2c, CrossCountry and ScotRail, start at 30 minutes. Claims usually go to the operator whose service was delayed or cancelled.

Know about a cancellation before you reach the platform

The scheme works best when you find out about a cancellation quickly, so you can catch the next suitable train within the two-hour window. That is where Choo Choo helps.
