Christmas Train Tickets: Book early, but not blindly
The cheapest Christmas train tickets usually go on sale around 12 weeks before travel, and some Christmas journeys can already be booked. Others are not on sale yet, because the festive timetable is often confirmed later than normal.
Martin Lewis's MoneySavingExpert has been reminding travellers of this 12-week rule of thumb again this month (another reason why we all love him). It is sound advice, with one catch: over Christmas and New Year, tickets for some routes are released a few weeks later than usual because of engineering works and bank holiday timetables.
This guide covers when you can book, what is happening on the railway over Christmas 2026, and how to pay less for the journeys you need.
Why book train tickets 12 weeks ahead?
Network Rail normally confirms the timetable for any given day 12 weeks in advance. Train companies then release their Advance tickets for those trains, usually soon after.
Advance tickets are the cheapest fares on most long-distance routes, but they come with two catches:
- They are sold in limited numbers: Once the cheapest batch on a train has gone, the price steps up to the next level. On busy days like the Friday before Christmas, the cheapest fares can go quickly.
- They are tied to a specific train: You must travel on the service you booked, unless it is cancelled or delayed.
Some operators release tickets further ahead than 12 weeks. Others release later than 12 weeks when engineering works or timetable changes are still being finalised, which is common over Christmas.
The practical takeaway: start checking around 12 weeks before you travel, and if your train is not showing yet, check again every few days.
Can you book Christmas trains now?
For most operators, yes. As of 20 October 2026, most train companies are taking bookings into January 2027, so Christmas Eve journeys are already on sale. A few are not there yet.
Here is how far ahead each operator was taking Advance bookings for weekday (Monday to Friday) trains on 20 October, according to National Rail:
Operator | Christmas Eve (Thu 24 Dec) on sale? |
|---|---|
Avanti West Coast | Yes |
Chiltern Railways | Yes |
CrossCountry | Yes |
East Midlands Railway | Yes |
Grand Central | Yes |
Great Northern, Southern, Thameslink | Yes |
Great Western Railway | Yes |
Greater Anglia | Yes |
Hull Trains | Yes |
LNER | Yes |
London Northwestern Railway | Not yet |
Lumo (London to Edinburgh) | Yes |
Northern | Yes |
ScotRail | Yes |
South Western Railway | Yes |
Southeastern | Yes |
TransPennine Express | Not yet |
Transport for Wales | Yes |
West Midlands Railway | Not yet |
Weekend horizons can differ from weekdays, and some routes have their own exceptions. TransPennine Express, for example, has closed Advance bookings beyond 23 December between Liverpool or Manchester and Hull, Leeds, York, Scarborough, Saltburn and Newcastle.
These dates move forward every week. For the latest, check National Rail's Advance Booking Dates page. If your train is not showing, it does not mean it is not running. The timetable may simply not be confirmed yet.
Christmas 2026: Key dates on the Railway
National Rail has published its travel advice for Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027. The dates to plan around:
Date | What to expect |
|---|---|
Thursday 24 December (Christmas Eve) | Many routes finish earlier than normal. Check your whole journey |
Friday 25 December (Christmas Day) | No National Rail services |
Saturday 26 December (Boxing Day) | Most operators not running. A very limited service from a small number of operators |
Monday 28 December | Substitute bank holiday for Boxing Day. Service details yet to be confirmed (as of 20/10/26) |
Thursday 31 December (New Year's Eve) | Some routes finish earlier than normal |
Friday 1 January 2027 | Special late-night services on some London routes after midnight |
Major engineering works
- Birmingham New Street, 24 to 28 December: Journeys to, from or through the station will be significantly disrupted. This affects a lot of cross-country travel, not just trips to Birmingham.
- London Paddington, 27 December to 3 January: Work at Dolphin Junction near Slough will affect services to Heathrow, the West of England, South Wales and the Thames Valley.
- London Waterloo, 27 and 28 December: Work near Queenstown Road means a reduced, amended timetable.
More works are still being confirmed. National Rail's guide to the last trains from London on Christmas Eve is due in late November or early December. Keep an eye on the National Rail Christmas travel page and check again the day before you travel.
